The capital city of Argostoli is a modern town laid out in a grid-pattern and easy to figure out. With a year round population of over 10,000 people, there are shops, restaurants, cafes and an active harbor with fishing boats and the main tourist attraction, the caretta-caretta turtles who feed at the nearby Koutavos Lagoon as well as from the fishermen who toss unwanted catch into the sea. The best time to see them is in the morning when the boats come in. If you see a crowd on the dock, chances are good that they are watching the turtles. The waterfront is a long promenade along Ioannou Metaxou Street, very nice for an evening walk, or a walk to the small pine shaded beaches to the north of town. At the lower end of the harbor is the Drapano Bridge which separates the lagoon from the harbor. Originally built out of wood by the British, it was later rebuilt out of stone and until recently was open to automobiles, but is now a pedestrian bridge. The lagoon is now a bird sanctuary and there are walkways and signs which show the different kinds of birds.
The center of Argostoli is a large square called Platia Vallianou which is actually two squares put together, or a square and a rectangle to be more precise.A lot of cafes, pizza restaurants and other places to socialize while eating and drinking. These cafes, bars and restaurants continue north, up Leoforos Vassileos Giorgiou V (King George V Ave) which has been pedestrian-ized for the two blocks up to the square. Going south from the square you pass the Focas Kosmetatos Foundation which is a small museum dedicated to the social and cultural history of Kefalonia. Further on is the Archaeological Museum.Just beyond the museum is the beginning of the Lithostroto Pedestrian Mall Street, which is exactly what it sounds like: a street of shops and cafes closed to automobile traffic and one of the best places to sit and have a coffee or a drink while you watch people shopping or going about their daily business or doing their evening volta.
From the waterfront of Argostoli there are two small ferries which go back and forth continuously to Lixouri, a 20 minute trip across the bay.The best beaches are in Lassi which you will have to drive to or take the local bus, but if you walk north along the coast you will come to an area where the pine forests come right down to the sea and you can put your beach towel in the shade and swim and snorkel in the clear waters, keeping an eye open for the sea turtles.
One of the best beaches in the world.
The Myrtos Beach is the trademark of Kefalonia. There is not one person in the world, which has chosen to visit Kefalonia and has not seen the beauty of Myrtos Beach. It is located in the northern part of Kefalonia and belongs to the municipality of Pilaros. Myrtos Beach is 8 km from Agia Efimia, 3 km from the village Divarata and about 30 km from Argostoli. The landscape is simply unmatched. Green rocks that result in quite a long beach with white pebbles. The turquoise waters and certainly with or without wave will make your swimming experience unforgettable and definitely will make you take many many photos. It has been voted one of the best beaches in Greece and the world. Every year Myrtos is being awarded from the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) with the blue flag. One of its main characteristics is that the water gets really deep just two steps from the sea shore. That is why the colour of the water is so impressive. Myrtos Beach is also well organized (canteen, umbrellas, sunbeds, lifeguard etc.). You will find everything necessary to enjoy a wonderful day. Tip: Do not leave until watching the sunset; it’s a unique experience.

MELISSANI CAVE is located not far from Karavomilo. It is a lacustrine cave of unique beauty and fully developed cave, which is 3.5 km long, 40m wide and 36m high. Melissani cave constitutes a unique geological phenomenon. It was created by a mechanical and chemical process called karstikopoiisi (dissolution of rocks) during which water enters the calcareous rocks, erodes them and creates hollows.
The underground Melissani lake was discovered in 1951 by speleontologist Giannis Petrochilos. A big part of its roof has fallen down revealing an amazing sight. During antiquity the lake was a place of worship dedicated to Pan and Nymph Melissani. Myths mention that Melissani committed suicide and fell in the lake because Pan was not responding to her love for him.
The lake includes also an islet on which archeologist S. Marinatos discovered Pan's sanctuary. The findings are at present in the Archeological Museum of Argostoli. These findings include a clay figure of Pan, a clay disc depicting dancing nymphs, a clay plate depicting the procession of nymphs and a small plate with a woman figure relief. Visitors reach the lake by an underground tunnel and have the opportunity to explore it with a boat and a guide. The traditional architecture, the peaceful landscape and the pebbled beaches compose the natural beauty of Assos. A stroll around the narrow alleys reveals colorful houses with pink and white blooms, lovely paths and old churches. Little taverns perched on the quayside overlooking the bay attract most of the visitors. The visit to the castle requires a long walk amidst the olive tree forests until you reach an archway. This journey is quite interesting and refreshing.

The beach slopes quickly away so that one can only go out a short distance from the shoreline before being out of depth.
